Is GDP a good measure of well-being?

I saw this a while back and am now catching up.  It's an article in the NY Times Magazine on "The Rise and Fall of GDP."  Definitely something to urge my students to read.

GDP will always have a place for what gets measured with money..that, or something approximating it. My concern is that people need accurate measurements for not just their education or health levels, but for what actually gets done in the course of a day for one another that money never even touches. Not only this, but our story of what we do for others needs to be recorded in the same time frame by others. This way, people have a better idea what transpires between the two ongoing stories and the evolving understanding and 'education' that takes place.
