Adventures in marketing

Have you heard the Motel 6 radio commercial where Tom Bodett, the chain's long-time pitchman, tells you to visit all the state capitals this summer?  He mentions Lincoln, NE; Austin, TX, and South Dakota's capital which he can't remember the name of until the end of the commercial.  Of course, the point is that you should stay at Motel 6 as you visit these state capitals.

Clever, yes.  Except for one thing.

There's no Motel 6 in Pierre, South Dakota.

Fail.

Yes a failure, but I suppose only an economist would bother to look that up.

Carry on...

Yea--but those ads are old -- I haven't heard one run in a long, long time. So the question is -- WAS there a Motel 6 at the time?

Besides--it is only a fail is someone actually WANTS to visit Pierre!

Didn't have to look it up, and I doubt (thought I don't know for sure) that there ever has been one in Pierre. Motel 6 rarely operates away from interstate highways or in small towns. Pierre is one of the only state capitals with a population under 15,000 and is not served by an interstate highway.

It's possible knew there was no Motel 6 in Pierre, and that is why he purposefully pretended to forget the name.
